Do you and your provider believe your mental health is in a better place because of your response to in-hospital care? If so, it may be time for discharge to a partial hospitalization program which will give you the therapies, medications and support you need to stay well and also allow you to go home to family and friends.
Here’s how you and your provider can determine if a partial hospitalization program through Carrus Health may be right for you.
Components of the Partial Hospitalization Program
A partial hospitalization program, or PHP, continues the skill-building, emotional support, medication management and other support used in the acute psychiatric care setting to stabilize a mental health condition. When a psychiatric patient has no continuing physical health problems or plans of self-harm, discharge from the behavioral hospital is an explorable option.
That being said, the individual must agree to certain program criteria set in place to improve symptoms, manage medications properly and build skills important to psychiatric, social and emotional well-being.
The hospital setting provides a very routine schedule of meals, recreation, bedtimes, therapies, medications and more. The patient in a PHP must be willing and able to assume some of the responsibility for that beneficial structure so that mental health therapeutic outcomes may be achieved and maintained for the long-term.
As such, a PHP expects the participating individual to:
- Attend the program punctually and regularly
- Avoid self-harm, including plans of self-harm
- Take medications on-time and as prescribed
- Respect the dignity and privacy of other individuals in the program
- Express and demonstrate a willing desire to adhere to treatment guidelines within the partial hospitalization program
- Report any substantial increase or change in mental health symptoms
- Refrain from substance abuse
- Continue living in a safe and secure home environment
Is the Partial Hospitalization Program Right for You?
Many factors come into play to determine if someone who has been acutely ill and hospitalized for a mental health problem is ready for a less restrictive environment such as a PHP. Your psychiatrist and other healthcare providers, along with input from you and your family or significant others, must certify that your home environment would benefit your continuing treatment and recovery for the long term.
Also, your mental health provider must be convinced that you are safe, with no tendencies to self-harm or the harm of others. Medications must continue, as well as counseling, cognitive behavior therapy and other treatments as prescribed. Your mental health provider must agree that return to home (and gradual return to school, work and other activities in the larger community) would help, and not hinder, progress toward optimal mental and emotional well-being.
As listed above, there are guidelines professionals use to determine fitness for partial hospitalization programs. However, just as with medical treatment plans, care for mental health disorders is highly individualized and must be adjusted in accordance with how a patient responds to medication, development of symptom and medication management skills, practical self-care and more.
Plus, PHP can include support for families whose loved ones participate in the program. There is the option for re-hospitalization if mental health symptoms deteriorate or the welfare and safety of the individual is in serious question.
